The MOC Imbalance Reversal the Next Morning
A large market-on-close order imbalance can push a stock's closing print away from where it would otherwise settle, and that mechanical push often fades by the next morning's open.

Market-on-close (MOC) orders are placed by index funds, benchmarked strategies, and corporate actions that need to trade at the official closing price rather than at any price of their choosing. When those orders are heavily one-sided, the closing auction can print a price that is temporarily pushed away from where the stock would trade absent that mechanical demand. The MOC imbalance reversal strategy bets that this push partly unwinds by the next morning.
A market-on-close order imbalance is often driven by index rebalancing or fund flows rather than new information about the company, so the closing print it produces tends to partially revert once that mechanical demand is gone — visible as a next-morning pullback toward where the stock traded before the imbalance appeared.
Where the imbalance comes from
Exchanges publish MOC imbalance data starting several minutes before the close, showing how many more shares are on the buy or sell side than can be matched at the current reference price — the same mechanism described in Imbalance Feeds And Indicative Auction Prices. A stock being added to a major index generates a predictable, large buy imbalance on its effective date, because every fund tracking that index must buy shares at the close to match the new weights. That demand is temporary — once the rebalancing trades are done, the buying pressure disappears, and if the closing price overshot fair value to accommodate all that buying, the next session's open often gives some of it back.
Worked example
A stock trades most of the day around $80.00, then the exchange publishes a growing MOC buy imbalance of 2 million shares in the final ten minutes ahead of an index-addition effective date. The closing auction prints at $81.20, roughly 1.5% above where the stock was trading intraday. A trader familiar with the pattern sells short (or reduces a long position) into strength going into the close, anticipating that tomorrow's open — once index funds have finished their required buying — settles back closer to $80.40, capturing roughly half of the imbalance-driven overshoot.
What this means in practice
The size of the expected reversal scales with the size of the imbalance relative to the stock's normal daily volume: a small imbalance in a heavily traded, liquid name barely moves the close and produces little to reverse, while a large imbalance in a thinly traded name can distort the close by several percent and leave a much bigger next-morning pullback to trade against.
Not every large closing imbalance is purely mechanical. Earnings releases, M&A announcements, and other genuine news can also generate large MOC imbalances, and in those cases the closing move reflects real information that should not be expected to reverse. Checking whether an imbalance coincides with an index-effective date or a scheduled rebalance, versus a news event, is essential before assuming reversal.
