Short-Term Reversal at the Minute Horizon
At horizons of a few minutes or less, a stock's own recent price moves tend to partially reverse rather than continue, a pattern rooted in bid-ask bounce and temporary liquidity imbalance rather than in slow-moving information.

Zoom into a stock's price at the scale of one-minute bars and a pattern shows up that doesn't exist at the scale of days or weeks: a sharp move up in one minute is, on average, followed by a small pullback in the next few minutes, and a sharp move down is followed by a small bounce. This is minute-horizon short-term reversal, and it is driven almost entirely by market microstructure rather than by anything resembling news.
At horizons of a few minutes, a stock's own recent return predicts a small reversal rather than continuation, because most very short-term moves reflect temporary liquidity consumption — one side of the order book getting hit hard — rather than new information, and liquidity typically refills within minutes.
Where the reversal comes from
Two mechanical effects dominate at this horizon. First, bid-ask bounce: if consecutive trades alternate between hitting the bid and lifting the offer, the price series mechanically zigzags even with no change in the "true" value of the stock, and any statistical test naively applied to trade prices will find reversal that isn't really there. Second, and more economically real, is temporary price impact: a large market order that sweeps several levels of the order book pushes price further than the stock's fundamental value has moved, and as market makers and other liquidity providers replenish the book over the following minutes, price drifts back partway.
Worked example
A stock trades at $102.00 and a large institutional sell order sweeps through the book in a matter of seconds, printing a low of $101.40 — a 0.6% drop with no accompanying news. A market maker or short-horizon strategy trading the reversal buys near $101.45, expecting the price impact of that single order to partly fade as new sell-side liquidity replenishes the book. Within three or four minutes, the stock trades back up to $101.75, and the position is closed, capturing roughly half of the temporary dislocation — the remaining $0.25 gap to the original $102.00 may or may not close, depending on whether the large sell order also carried some genuine information.
What this means in practice
This is squarely the territory of market makers and high-frequency strategies, not discretionary traders, because the edge per trade is tiny (fractions of a percent) and only becomes meaningful compounded across an enormous number of trades with very low transaction costs. It is one of the core justifications for maintaining continuous two-sided quotes: a market maker who buys into a temporary dip and sells into a temporary spike is systematically harvesting this reversal as a byproduct of providing liquidity.
Not every large, fast move is temporary. Distinguishing a liquidity-driven sweep from the first leg of a genuine information-driven move in real time is the central hard problem of short-horizon trading — betting on reversal into what turns out to be informed selling is one of the most common ways market-making strategies suffer outsized losses during genuine news events.
