Does HFT Improve Market Quality?
A survey of what the empirical microstructure literature actually finds about high-frequency trading's effect on spreads, depth, and volatility — the honest answer is 'it depends on which HFT and which metric,' not a simple yes or no.
Prerequisites: What Makes A Market Good?
High-frequency trading is a favorite target of public criticism — the image of machines racing at microsecond speed to "skim" profits from ordinary investors is a compelling story. The empirical research paints a more complicated picture, largely because "HFT" bundles together several genuinely different activities: passive market making, statistical arbitrage across correlated instruments, and latency arbitrage that exploits stale quotes. They don't all affect market quality the same way.
What tends to hold up
Most studies find that HFT participation is associated with narrower quoted and effective spreads and faster incorporation of information into prices — market makers competing at high speed compress the cost of trading small size, and prices adjust to news more quickly than in earlier, slower market structures. Several studies using natural experiments, like exchanges introducing speed bumps or co-location changes, find that when HFT activity is reduced, spreads tend to widen again, consistent with HFT market making genuinely contributing to tighter markets rather than just coinciding with them.
Where the evidence is more mixed or negative
The picture is less flattering on other dimensions. Some research finds that HFT liquidity is less resilient during stress — it can withdraw very quickly exactly when it's needed most, as documented around events like the 2010 Flash Crash. There's also consistent evidence that a subset of HFT strategies specifically profit from being faster than other liquidity providers at cancelling stale quotes (latency arbitrage), which is a transfer from slower market makers rather than a service to end investors, and adds cost to the market makers on the other side even as it may not directly harm retail order flow. And market depth, as distinct from the quoted spread, doesn't uniformly improve — some studies find thinner posted size behind the touch as speed increases.
What this means in practice
The honest summary from the literature is conditional: passive HFT market making tends to improve visible metrics like spread and short-term price efficiency, but the fastest, most latency-sensitive strategies impose a real cost on other liquidity providers and can make liquidity less dependable in stressed conditions. Policy debates about speed bumps, message fees, and access rules are essentially arguments about how to keep the beneficial parts of HFT while blunting the purely speed-based rent-seeking parts — which is why "does HFT help or hurt" rarely gets a single clean answer.
HFT is not one thing — passive market-making HFT and latency-arbitrage HFT show up very differently in the data, and most rigorous studies now measure their effects separately rather than lumping "high-frequency trading" into a single verdict.
