When the Crypto Basis Trade Unwinds
The crypto cash-and-carry trade — long spot, short perpetual futures, collecting funding — looks market-neutral, but a funding-rate flip or exchange stress can force a rushed unwind that turns a steady income trade into a sudden loss.
Prerequisites: Perpetual Futures and Funding Rates
The classic crypto basis trade buys spot bitcoin and simultaneously shorts an equal notional of perpetual futures. When perpetual futures trade above spot — the normal state when speculative demand for leveraged longs outweighs shorts — the perpetual's funding mechanism pays the short side periodically, and the trade collects that funding as steady income while its price exposure nets to roughly zero.
The risk hides in that "roughly." The two legs sit on different venues, each margined separately, and each exposed to its own liquidation and counterparty risk. If funding flips negative — shorts start paying longs instead — the trade's income turns into a cost overnight. If the exchange holding the spot leg or the futures leg has a solvency scare, the trader can't just quietly walk away; withdrawal queues and de-pegged spot prices during a crisis can force an unwind at exactly the worst possible prices, on top of losing the funding income the trade was designed to earn.
The basis trade is only market-neutral to price risk, not to venue risk — a rushed unwind across two separately margined legs during exchange stress can convert a steady funding-collection strategy into a real, correlated loss.
Traders who run this at scale typically size positions well below maximum leverage and diversify spot and futures legs across venues specifically so that one exchange's problems don't force an unwind of the whole book at once. They also track funding rates continuously rather than assuming the historically positive average will hold, since funding can flip sign for days at a time during a sharp market move.
