Why two random walks give a spurious regression

You generate two completely independent random walks, XtX_t and YtY_t, with unrelated shocks, and regress YtY_t on XtX_t in levels. Even though nothing connects them, you routinely get a large R2R^2 and a tt-statistic on the slope that looks wildly significant.

Explain why this happens, and describe the diagnostics and remedy.

Your answer

This one is open-ended. Work it through, then check your reasoning against the full solution.
