TRACE Reporting and Post-Trade Transparency

TRACE is the system that forces US corporate bond dealers to report trades shortly after execution, turning a once-opaque market into one where recent prices are publicly visible.

Prerequisites: The Corporate Bond Market and How It Trades

For decades, corporate bond trades happened by phone between a dealer and a client, and nobody outside that call knew the price. A pension fund selling a bond had no easy way to check whether it got a fair deal. TRACE (Trade Reporting and Compliance Engine) is the FINRA-run system that fixed this: every US corporate bond dealer must report the price, size, and time of a trade to TRACE, usually within 15 minutes, and that information is then made public.

TRACE turned the US corporate bond market from a dark, dealer-quoted market into one where anyone can see recent trade prices — but reporting is still delayed relative to equities, and very large trades are size-capped or delayed in what's shown publicly.

The mechanics matter for how you read the tape. Reports aren't instantaneous quotes — they are records of trades that already happened, so a TRACE print is a lagging signal, not a live one. Trades above a certain size (historically $5 million for investment-grade, $1 million for high-yield) have their true size masked and shown only as "5MM+" or similar, so a trader can see that a big trade occurred without seeing exactly how big.

Worked example. A trader wants to check whether a $2 million client order in a BBB-rated bond was priced fairly. Pulling the TRACE tape shows three trades in the last hour: $500,000 at 98.75, $1.2 million at 98.70, and $3 million reported as "5MM+" at 98.60. The client's $2 million print at 98.68 sits comfortably inside that range, evidence the execution was reasonable rather than off-market.

TRACE data is also the backbone of academic and quant research into corporate bond liquidity, since it is the only comprehensive public record of who traded what, at what price, in a market that otherwise trades over the phone or via RFQ platforms.
