Orders of Magnitude and Rounding Discipline

The interview and desk habit of rounding numbers to one significant figure at each step of a mental calculation, so answers stay fast and the size of your error stays tracked, instead of chasing false precision.

Interview and trading-desk mental math is rarely about computing an exact answer — it's about landing within a factor of two or three, fast, and knowing which digit you can trust. Orders-of-magnitude discipline means rounding every input to one or two significant figures before you start multiplying, rather than carrying full precision through several steps and only rounding at the end, which is slower and no more accurate for the kind of estimate usually being asked for.

The habit is to round to the nearest convenient power of ten or half-power (1, 3, 10, 30, 100...) at each step, track roughly how far off each rounding pushes you, and combine those errors at the end rather than trying to avoid them. Estimating annual U.S. coffee spending, for example: roughly 300 million people, say 60% drink coffee daily (180 million), at roughly $3 a cup on 300 days a year: 180×3×300=162,000180 \times 3 \times 300 = 162{,}000, in millions of dollars — about $160 billion. Every input was rounded hard, but the answer is very likely correct to within a factor of 2–3, which is exactly the precision the question was asking for.

The failure mode to avoid is spending your limited time chasing a third significant figure on an input you're genuinely unsure of to within 50% — carrying "2.7 million" through a calculation when you actually meant "somewhere between 2 and 4 million" produces false confidence in the final digit, not real accuracy, and burns time you don't have in a timed setting.

Round aggressively to one or two significant figures at every step of a mental estimate rather than at the end — it's faster and no less accurate than false precision, since the goal is landing within a factor of two or three, not extra decimal places.
