Letting A Winner Run

Letting a winner run means staying in a profitable position until your system's actual exit rule fires — a moving-average cross, a trailing stop, a signal reversal — rather than closing early out of anxiety about giving the gain back. It's the deliberate antidote to cutting winners short, and it matters because many systematic edges, especially trend-following ones, get most of their long-run profit from a small number of large, sustained moves; exiting those trades early caps exactly the returns the strategy depends on.

The mechanism that makes this workable is usually a trailing stop or signal-based exit rather than a fixed profit target — the position is allowed to keep growing as long as the trend continues, with the exit trigger only kicking in once the trend itself shows genuine signs of reversing, not merely pausing or pulling back briefly. This requires tolerating give-back on the way out: a trailing stop set at, say, 10% below the recent high will always surrender some open profit compared to selling at the exact peak, but that tradeoff is what allows the position to stay in for the much larger moves that pay for it.

A trend-following system on a commodity move might see the position run from a 5% gain to a 40% gain over several months by staying in through multiple minor pullbacks, only exiting once the trailing stop is finally hit — versus a discretionary trader who closes at the first 10% pullback along the way and captures a fraction of the same move.
