Gas molecules shuffling between two chambers

Asked at Two Sigma, DE Shaw

Two connected chambers together hold NN gas molecules. Each second, one molecule is chosen uniformly at random from all NN and moved to the other chamber. Let XtX_t be the number of molecules in the left chamber.

(a) In the long run, what is the distribution of XtX_t? (b) If the system starts with all NN molecules on the left, what is the expected number of seconds until it returns to that all-on-the-left state?
