Which lightbulb burns out first?

Asked at Optiver, IMC

Three lightbulbs are switched on together. Their lifetimes are independent and exponentially distributed with failure rates λ1=1\lambda_1 = 1, λ2=2\lambda_2 = 2, and λ3=3\lambda_3 = 3 (per year).

(a) How long, on average, until the first bulb fails? (b) What is the probability that bulb 33 (the highest-rate one) is the first to fail?

Your answer

This one is open-ended. Work it through, then check your reasoning against the full solution.
