The king who wants to test everyone
A kingdom has one million people, and one in every 500 has a certain disease. A test for the disease has a false-negative rate of 1 per cent (a sick person tests negative 1 time in 100) and a false-positive rate of 2 per cent (a healthy person tests positive 2 times in 100).
The king plans to test everyone and quarantine every positive.
- How many people will test positive?
- Of those, what fraction actually has the disease?
Show a hint
Work with counts, not percentages. Start by splitting the million into sick and healthy, then apply the error rates to each group.
