The prisoner's dilemma

Two suspects are held in separate cells and cannot communicate. Each is offered the same deal.

  • If both stay silent, each serves 1 year.
  • If one betrays the other and the other stays silent, the betrayer goes free and the silent one serves 10 years.
  • If both betray, each serves 5 years.

Each suspect cares only about minimising their own sentence.

  1. What does a rational suspect do, and why?
  2. Why is the outcome worse for both than the one they could have had?
