Born on the same day, same parents, not twins

Question

Two children were born to the same mother and father, on the same day of the same year, within an hour of each other. Yet they are not twins.

How is this possible? Give the simplest answer, and one alternative.

They are two of a set of triplets (or quadruplets, or more). Why it works. "Twins" means exactly two children from one birth. Triplets are three children from one birth, and any two of them satisfy every condition in the puzzle without being twins. An alternative. The wording "same year" rules out the other common answer, siblings born on the same date in different years. Another stretch: the "same mother and father" could be adoptive parents who adopted two unrelated children born on the same day, which satisfies the letter of the puzzle if "born to" is read loosely.
