The Research Diary
A simple, dated, written record of every idea tried, why it was tried, and what happened — the low-tech habit that prevents a research process from silently re-testing the same failed ideas and from forgetting why a winning strategy was trusted in the first place.
A researcher testing trading ideas will, over a career, try hundreds or thousands of variations — different lookback windows, different universes, different filters — and the overwhelming majority will fail to show a real edge. Without a written record, there's no way to remember, six months later, that a nearly identical idea was already tried and discarded, or to recall exactly what assumptions and data were used when a strategy that did work was first discovered. The research diary is the low-tech fix: a dated, append-only log where every test — including the ones that fail — gets a short written entry describing the idea, the reasoning behind it, what was tested, and what happened.
Why the failures matter as much as the successes
The single biggest practical value of a diary is capturing negative results. A researcher who doesn't write down failed ideas will, sooner or later, re-test one of them without realizing it — burning time, and worse, effectively getting an extra unrecorded "free" attempt at finding a spurious pattern in the same data, which quietly increases the risk of a false discovery even though no one intended to go looking twice. A diary that records every attempt, successful or not, also lets a researcher (or their manager) later reconstruct roughly how many ideas were tried against a given dataset before the winning one turned up — information that is directly relevant to judging whether that winning result is likely to be real or a product of trying enough variations that something was bound to look good by chance.
What a useful entry actually contains
A good diary entry states the hypothesis before showing the result — what pattern was expected and why, in a sentence or two, written before running the test rather than reconstructed afterward to fit whatever came out. It records what was actually tried: the data, the parameters, the universe. And it records the outcome plainly, including "this didn't work and here's my best guess why," which is often the most useful sentence in the whole entry for whoever reads it later, including a future version of the same researcher.
What this means in practice
The format doesn't need to be sophisticated — a shared document, a wiki page, or a simple text file with dated entries all work, as long as it's actually kept up consistently and isn't edited after the fact to make hindsight look like foresight. The habit matters far more than the tooling: a diary that's easy to skip gets skipped, and a research process without one tends to relearn the same lessons repeatedly.
