Equipment and Aircraft ABS
Equipment and aircraft asset-backed securities are secured by leases or loans on physical, movable hard assets, so their credit analysis centers on residual values and repossession, not just borrower cash flow.
Prerequisites: What Securitization Does and Why It Exists
Equipment ABS pools together loans or leases on machinery — trucks, railcars, construction equipment, medical devices — while aircraft ABS pools leases on commercial jets. Both differ from most consumer ABS in one key way: the collateral is a physical, movable asset with its own resale market, so a chunk of the deal's value depends on what that asset is worth years from now, not just on whether the lessee keeps paying.
Equipment and aircraft ABS credit quality depends heavily on residual value risk — what the physical asset can be sold or re-leased for after the current contract ends — in addition to ordinary counterparty payment risk.
Why residual value matters so much
A truck lease structured so the lessee returns the truck at the end is only as safe as the assumption about the truck's future resale price. If used-truck prices fall — because of a recession, a technology shift, or oversupply — the trust can come up short even if every lessee paid on time throughout the lease. Aircraft ABS carries this risk in an even more concentrated form: a widebody jet's value depends on fuel prices, route economics, and whether the specific model stays in demand, and a small number of aircraft can dominate a deal's collateral pool, so one plane's value swing (or one lessee airline's bankruptcy) moves the whole structure noticeably.
Rating agencies handle this by applying conservative haircuts to appraised residual values and by checking how diversified a pool is across manufacturers, lessees, and asset vintages — a pool of one aircraft type leased to one struggling airline is analyzed very differently from a diversified equipment pool spread across hundreds of small-business lessees.
