Equal-Length Cables And Access Fairness
A rule some exchanges and colocation facilities enforce requiring every trading firm's cable run from their server to the matching engine to be physically the same length, so no firm gets a speed advantage purely from a shorter cable.
In a colocation facility, dozens of trading firms rent server cabinets at different physical distances from the exchange's matching engine, and since signals travel at a finite speed through cable, a firm with a physically shorter cable run would otherwise receive market data microseconds earlier and get its orders to the matching engine microseconds sooner than a firm with a longer run — a pure accident of cabinet location rather than any trading skill. To prevent this, many exchanges mandate that every firm's cable, regardless of which cabinet they occupy, be cut or coiled to an identical total length, so every participant experiences the same physical transmission delay to and from the matching engine.
This doesn't eliminate speed competition — firms still race on hardware, software, and strategy — but it removes real-estate location within the data center as a source of unfair advantage, which exchanges view as important for maintaining confidence that trading is decided by strategy rather than which cabinet a firm happened to be assigned.
Enforcing equal length in practice means the exchange sometimes deliberately coils extra cable into a shorter physical run to bring it up to the mandated length, rather than trying to shorten every firm's cable to match the nearest cabinet — it's easier to add slack to a short run than to remove distance from a long one, so the standard length is generally set close to the longest run any tenant needs.
Equal-length cabling policies force every colocated firm's connection to the matching engine to have identical physical transmission delay, removing cabinet location as a source of speed advantage while leaving genuine strategy and hardware competition intact.
