Receipt and Email Panels

Alternative-data panels built from consumers who opt in to share scanned receipts or email inbox data, giving an early read on company revenue before official earnings are reported.

Some alt-data vendors recruit a panel of consumers — often through a rewards or cash-back app — who agree to share either photographed purchase receipts or read-access to their email inbox (specifically order confirmations and shipping notifications) in exchange for a small benefit. Aggregated across tens or hundreds of thousands of panelists, this produces a real-time, bottom-up sample of consumer spending by retailer, category, and sometimes specific product, weeks before the underlying company reports quarterly revenue.

Email panels tend to be strongest for e-commerce, since online order confirmations are a reliable, structured data source that email inbox scanning can pick up almost completely for panelists who make the purchase; receipt panels cover in-store purchases that leave no email trail, but rely on the panelist actually remembering to scan or photograph the receipt, which introduces its own gaps. Vendors extrapolate the panel sample up to a full-population revenue estimate using known demographic and geographic weighting, then sell the resulting revenue-growth nowcast to funds ahead of an earnings date.

The main things a user of this data needs to sanity-check are panel size and representativeness (a panel skewed toward younger or higher-income consumers, or concentrated in a few metro areas, biases the extrapolation) and the extrapolation methodology itself, since two vendors covering the same retailer can produce meaningfully different revenue estimates from ostensibly similar underlying data.

Receipt and email panels estimate a company's revenue before it's reported by extrapolating from a consented consumer panel's actual purchases, with reliability hinging on panel size, demographic representativeness, and the vendor's extrapolation methodology rather than the raw data alone.
