Certifications: CFA, FRM and CQF
A short guide to the three certifications quant-adjacent job ads mention most, and which one actually matches which job.
Job postings for research, risk and portfolio roles often list a certification as "preferred," and candidates waste real time deciding whether to pursue one. The three that come up most are the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), the FRM (Financial Risk Manager), and the CQF (Certificate in Quantitative Finance) — and they are not interchangeable, because they train for different jobs.
The CFA is broad and valuation-focused: equity analysis, fixed income, portfolio management, ethics. It suits fundamental research, asset management and buy-side analyst roles, and is a three-level exam sequence typically taking two to four years alongside a job. The FRM is narrower and risk-focused: market risk, credit risk, operational risk, and regulatory capital. It suits risk-management and compliance-adjacent roles at banks and asset managers, and is two exams, often finishable in a year. The CQF is the most quantitative of the three, covering stochastic calculus, derivatives pricing and numerical methods — closer to what a desk quant or derivatives researcher actually uses day to day, and it is priced and marketed as a professional (not academic) qualification rather than a prestige credential.
None of the three substitutes for a strong coding portfolio or a track record on real data, which is what most systematic-trading hiring managers screen for first. A certification mainly signals breadth and persistence; it rarely wins an interview by itself, but it can tip a resume screen when the rest of the background is thin.
Match the certification to the job: CFA for fundamental/portfolio roles, FRM for risk roles, CQF for pricing and quant-research roles — and treat all three as a resume signal, not a substitute for demonstrated coding and modelling ability.
